Canada's Annual Decentralised Energy Forum
October 28-29, 2024 | Fairmont Château Whistler British Columbia
ACHIEVING ENERGY RESILIENCE
The only Canadian industry event that connects industry players to new business and partnership opportunities. Our forum showcases successful innovations that demonstrate the sector’s ability to transition to a sustainable, resilient and affordable energy future. The goal is to accelerate the adoption of these innovations and to integrate them into real projects.
Our energy systems are experiencing a deep transformation driven by changing consumer patterns, natural disasters, economic challenges, and global commitments to reducing our reliance on non-renewable natural resources. The Decentralised Energy Forum unites global leaders that are taking meaningful action towards the development of a resilient and affordable energy future.
Microgrids
Microgrids are clusters of energy systems integrated into buildings and communities including thermal and electrical energy generation and storage. The electrical energy components of a microgrid can operate connected to the distribution grid but are also designed to disconnect (i.e., "island mode") when needed. Benefits include increased resilience, energy accessibility, efficiency gains and deferred capital costs for new transmission capacity.
Virtual Power Plants
A Virtual Power Plant (VPP) is a network of decentralised electrical energy systems (e.g., generation and storage) that are aggregated and managed through a cloud- based controller but remain independent in operation and ownership. Emerging incentives and revenue opportunities are driving adoption of VPPs.
The Age of Prosumers
Prosumers generate energy onsite to meet some or all of their needs. Grid-connected prosumers are becoming more prevalent as more jurisdictions design and adopt new tariff structures that reward electrical energy systems located closer to the consumer, especially if they demonstrate reduced congestion on the grid. Microgrids, battery-to-grid, demand response and efficiency valuation innovations are empowering prosumers.
The Power of Data
Digitalisation is critical to robust and reliable energy infrastructure. Extraordinary innovation opportunities are inherent in the generation, management and consumption of energy. The benefits that can be gained from digital solutions such as predictive analytics, controllers, and automation will create more connected, intelligent, efficient, reliable and sustainable energy systems.
Rethinking Natural Resources
How will the energy transition affect the sustainability of natural resources on the planet? What practices and principles can we adopt to meet the energy demands of a growing global population using fewer resources and and leaving a smaller footprint. Innovations in critical minerals procurement, renewable fuels, and heat pumps are just a few areas of active innovation.
The Workforce Revolution
By 2050, Canada is looking to double or even triple electricity generation to meet the needs of the energy transition. There is an urgent need to develop a highly skilled workforce to meet this unprecedented change for the industry and this requires close collaboration between educational and industry stakeholders.
Highlights from 2023
In 2023, we talked about a new era of energy and the modernisation of decentralised energy systems, addressing the imperative adoption due to the escalating challenges of climate change, and discussing the crucial role of policy and regulations.
